PreviewSome of the most unforgettable travel experiences begin with a simple question:
“Saan kaya papunta 'yung daan na 'yan?”
That was exactly how we discovered La Cueva Camp Site in Lobo, Batangas during our visit to Malabrigo Lighthouse.
We were exploring the area around Malabrigo Lighthouse when we noticed a small path leading downward. It wasn't part of our original plan, but naturally, curiosity got the better of us.
We decided to ask one of the local vendors nearby.
“Kuya, saan po papunta 'yung daan?”
His answer immediately made us even more curious.
“Sa dagat.”
And when you think about it, it actually made sense. The lighthouse is positioned on elevated ground, so naturally, somewhere below that high point was the coastline.
But knowing that the path led to the sea was one thing.
Actually going down there was another.
Still, our curiosity won.
So we decided to take the path.
As we started going down, we discovered a cemented staircase leading toward the coastline.
At first, it seemed manageable.
But the farther we went, the more we realized that there was still quite a distance to go.
Step by step, we continued downward.
And eventually, we reached the bottom.
The moment we arrived, we immediately understood why the journey was worth it.
Parang lahat ng pagod sa pagbaba ng hagdan, biglang nawala.
The sea breeze welcomed us almost immediately. After walking down all those stairs, the cool air coming from the ocean felt incredibly refreshing.
And then we looked around.
The scenery was completely different from what we had expected.
The shoreline had a stony texture, but the light-colored stones and sand still gave the beach a beautiful white-sand-like appearance.
The combination of the shoreline, clear coastal air, and surrounding rock formations created scenery that felt almost unreal.
For a moment, it didn't even feel like we were still in Batangas.
The rock formations especially caught our attention.
They gave the coastline a raw and natural character, almost like we had stumbled upon a hidden coastal destination somewhere far away from the usual tourist spots.
And perhaps the best part was how quiet everything was.
There were no large crowds.
No busy resort areas.
No loud surroundings.
Just the sea, the rocks, the breeze, and the sound of nature.
We also noticed several small kubo in the area.
From what we could see, these appeared to be spaces that may be available for visitors or campers, adding to the rustic character of the place.
Looking around, we could easily imagine spending a night here.
Imagine setting up camp, listening to the waves, feeling the cool sea breeze, and looking up at the night sky with very little noise around you.
That kind of experience is becoming harder to find.
And that's why La Cueva Camp Site felt like such a discovery for us.
It wasn't polished or overly developed.
Instead, its charm came from the natural surroundings and the feeling of being away from the usual crowds.
We didn't plan to visit La Cueva.
We didn't even know it was there.
We simply noticed a small path while visiting Malabrigo Lighthouse, asked a local where it led, and decided to follow our curiosity.
And that simple decision gave us one of the most memorable experiences of our entire Lobo adventure.
We spent some time down there simply enjoying the surroundings and resting after the walk.
The journey had already given us a little challenge, but being beside the sea made it feel completely worthwhile.
Eventually, we remembered something important.
We still had to go back up.
And yes, the stairs that were challenging going down were waiting for us again.
Going back up was definitely another challenge.
After enjoying the cool sea breeze and relaxing by the coast, we had to gather enough energy to conquer the staircase all over again.
But even that became part of the adventure.
Because sometimes, the best memories aren't created when everything is easy.
They're created when you push yourself a little, explore somewhere unfamiliar, and discover something beautiful waiting at the end.
For us, La Cueva Camp Site in Lobo, Batangas was exactly that.
A hidden coastal escape beneath Malabrigo Lighthouse.
A place where the sea breeze welcomes you after a long descent.
A shoreline surrounded by natural rock formations.
A quiet area with small kubo that adds to its rustic charm.
And a destination we never knew existed until curiosity led us there.
If you're visiting Malabrigo Lighthouse, it's worth taking the time to explore the area around it and discover what lies beyond the obvious path.
Just be prepared for the stairs—because getting down is only half of the adventure.
But once you reach the bottom and see the view for yourself, you might find yourself thinking the same thing we did:
“Sulit pala.”
And when it's finally time to climb all those stairs again?
Well...
That's just the price of discovering a hidden gem.
Some destinations are easy to find.
Others are discovered because you decide to follow a path you didn't expect to take.
For us, La Cueva Camp Site in Lobo, Batangas was exactly that kind of place. We didn't plan to visit it. We discovered it while exploring around Malabrigo Lighthouse, followed our curiosity, and ended up finding a quiet coastal escape beneath the lighthouse.
